The vast majority of the powder coating we is considered to be a decorative coat, which doesn’t offer great protection when used outdoors.
We have many options that will enable your outdoor substrates to withstand the elements of the outdoors. Namely, by using metals more suitable for outdoor use, by using precoated metals, by sandblasting, by galvanising, zinc plating, E-coating or by specifying chemical pre-treatments prior to the application of the coloured powder coat finish.
In addition to the aforementioned, zinc based epoxy primers can be applied over sandblasted surfaces before the application of the finish colour coat. This will improve the service life of the aluminium or steel when used outdoors.
Zinc based epoxy primers tend to be less porous tan typical polyester powder coatings. This powder primer acts similarly to any layer of zinc applied over steel, offering itself as sacrificial coating that will be consumed in preference to the steel substrate.
